VISITOR INFORMATION
Hidden in the roof of a church, a 300-year old herb garret houses Britain's only surviving 19th century operating theatre. This museum, one of London's most intriguing historical interiors, contains the Operating Theatre, in use between 1821 and 1862 in the days before anaesthetic and antiseptic surgery.
The Herb Garret was used by the apothecary of St Thomas' Hospital to store the herbs used within patient's medicines. From opium to wormwood and oyster shells, from ebony handled amputation saws and knives, a most unusual medical collection awaits.
Enjoy a family day out with Discount Britain!
N.b. Some of the specialist talks can be very detailed in content, particularly where describing the history of surgery. Children of 7+ should find them suitable, however, the museum itself has plenty of activities to divert the attention of children from the toddler upwards!
