VISITOR INFORMATION
Portmeirion is located on a private peninsula on the coast of Snowdonia. The village was built from 1925 to 1976 by architect and conservationist Sir Clough Williams-Ellis who wanted to show that sympathetic development could enhance a naturally beautiful site rather than defile it. Portmeirion is known for its role as the location of Patrick McGoohan's cult "The Prisoner" television series. The village has shops, cafes, restaurants and two hotels and is surrounded by woodlands and beaches. The 70 acre sub-tropical woodland garden has over 5,000 species of plants including unusual rhododendrons and camellias, Californian coast redwoods, a New Zealand 'dancing tree', and the tallest Chilean maiten tree in the UK.
